Meet our school dog

Nala joined our school in January 2025 and she belongs to Miss Ackland. Nala comes into school regularly and is based in Miss Ackland’s    classroom. Lots of planning, research, risk assessments and training took place before introducing Nala to the school and these will continue to be carried out/updated accordingly.

What type of dog is Nala?

Nala is a KC registered miniature poodle. Poodles are renowned for being good-tempered and intelligent dogs meaning that they are well suited to the role of a wellbeing dog.

Why have a school dog?

Children can benefit educationally and emotionally, increase their understanding of responsibility and develop empathy and nurturing skills through contact with a dog. In addition to these benefits, children take great enjoyment from interaction with a dog and having a dog in school can encourage reluctant children to come to school. Nala is gentle and loving and will offer children opportunities to improve their social development skills. For some children, a dog will be a special friend, helping them to build self-esteem, relax and have fun. For others, time spent with a dog will be a reward for excellent effort with a difficult challenge.

Is there a risk in bringing a dog into a school environment?

Yes there is. However, there are a variety of accidents which can happen within the school which far exceed the number of incidents caused by a dog. The risk assessment for Nala will be reviewed regularly. A significant amount of research has been undertaken before purchasing a school dog and we believe the positive effects of such demonstrably outweigh any negatives.

Whenever Nala is being walked around the school, she will be on a lead to ensure she is controlled at all times. Nala will spend time acclimatising to the hustle and bustle of school life and her time with the children will be gradually increased. She will have a safe space which will be sectioned off in the corner of Miss Ackland’s classroom.
