The semi – final of the Youth Speaks competition was held last night 12/02/15 at Callington Community College. Year 6 pupils - Siân, Jem and Joanna - were sixth up out of thirteen teams. Despite being nervous about speaking to a large audience, they confidently presented their topic ‘Are we losing the art of conversation?’. They were animated, engaging and expressed their points eloquently. The judges agreed and nominated them as one of the top three teams in the district and they will now go through to the finals in Plymouth after half term. After the competition, the judges commented on their brilliant team work, the clarity of their speeches and the group’s interactions with the audience which made a captivating speech.  Well done Siân, Jem and Joanna and good luck for the final!

Gifted mathematicians from across the Multi – Academy Trust came together at Callington Primary School for a challenging afternoon of maths. Through team work and determination the children completed the ‘Chocolate Muffin Challenge’ which involved exploring fractions, percentages, volume, construction of 2D shapes and isometric drawing as well as cooking some delicious chocolate muffins!

For the academic year 2015 -2016 Launceston College and Duchy Academy Trust Partnership have three School Direct places. There are two secondary places available; one mathematics and one physics, and one primary mathematics place.

School Direct is an exciting new teacher training route for top graduates, who want to be part of a school team from day one. You will pay training fees however you may be eligible for a bursary of up to £20,000 or a scholarship of £25,000 to support you while you train.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding trainee Primary School teacher who will specialise in Maths  for September 2015.  You should be enthusiastic and innovative and will join a large, friendly and successful team. The successful trainee will be required to teach the full curriculum at primary level developing an expertise for maths which will enable you to become an advocate for Mathematics and inspire children to enjoy learning.

We have opted to use a skills based curriculum for all foundation subjects, science and computing as we believe this facilitates the acquisition of transferable skills which enables our pupils to learn how to learn by embedding subject-specific skills and thinking skills. As a trainee teacher, you will have the exciting opportunity to discuss areas of interest with the children and transform these into innovative topics which will motivate our pupils to learn. You will devise stunning starters to immerses the children in their new topic so that they become enthused about the learning journey ahead. Learning journeys will evolve from the skeleton plan and may change course due to the children's interests and formative assessment With the children, you will have the opportunity to plan fantastic finish for each topic to provide the children with a purpose for their learning.

 

 

Callington Primary School entered two teams into this year's Youth Speaks competition. Elizabeth, Lowenna and Tamsin spoke confidently upon an interesting issue of their choice: Graffiti - Art or Vandalism? whilst Siân, Jem and Joanna discussed 'Are we losing the art of conversation?' with enthusiasm. Both teams engaged the audience and represented the school brilliantly against 8 other teams. After great deliberation, the judges announced that Siân, Jem and Joanna were the winners of the junior local event. They will attend the area finals at Callington Community College on 11/02/15.
