PSHE (including RSE) Education

Intent

At Callington Primary School, personal, social, health and economic education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally, emotionally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

We provide our children with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through opportunities such as school council, peer mediating, house team captains and taking part in community events such as Honey Fair and Mayfest.

Implementation

We have developed a flexible PSHE curriculum, which meets the current needs of our children. In developing this curriculum, we have utilised components of published PSHE materials including Cornwall Healthy Schools: PSHE Curriculum for Cornwall resources. The curriculum focuses on the three core learning themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. Also, building in opportunities to link British Values and SMSC.

The curriculum is constantly reviewed and updated according to the Government’s advice, building on the content already outlined in the statutory guidance: drug education, financial education, sex and relationship education (SRE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle.

At Callington Primary School, PSHE education is taught both as a discreet subject and through focus days such as Equality and Diversity, E-Safety and Forest School. Principles of PSHE education are also embedded across the curriculum and promoted through the school mission statement, ‘Together we nurture, together we inspire, together we achieve’ and values, ‘Respect, Happiness, Creativity, Friendship and Perseverance.’ Whole school assemblies are regularly focused on these values and they are displayed in all classrooms where they can be referred to regularly. Children are able to record when they have seen a peer demonstrate one of the school values which can then be celebrated in class or a whole school assembly. In addition, teachers fill in values postcards to send home to celebrate the actions of children who have demonstrated one of the school values.

Throughout KS2, we offer residential trips, where there is a particular focus on developing pupils’ self-esteem, self-confidence, self-belief and giving them opportunities to develop leadership and co-operation skills through team building as we want all children to aim high to achieve their maximum potential.

Impact

Through our PSHE curriculum, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them to become caring, respectful, responsible and confident individuals and citizens.

Children will be resilient learners, excellent communicators and able to discuss personal matters with appropriate adults as well as sharing in emotional literacy and discussion with their peers. Children will demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, and Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty. Children demonstrate a healthy outlook towards themselves and school.

Children are happy to attend Callington Primary School. They have strong friendships where they are kind and caring towards each other. Children demonstrate respect to staff, visitors and their peers. They persevere when faced with obstacles in order to be successful. Children show creativity across all areas of the curriculum. They are thoughtful, very quick to offer their help and feel strongly about issues that affect our world, such as the effect of plastic on the oceans and the importance of recycling.

Enrichment

Forest School

All children take part in half-termly forest school sessions. These sessions are used to develop the skills that they have learnt about in explicit PSHE lessons as well taking risks and making safe choices through cooperation and team building activities. 

Community Events

Every year, children take part in events such as the Autumn Show, Honey Fair and Mayfest. The children take great pride in entering pieces of artwork into competitions. They visit the Honey Fair during the school day where they get to take part in different events within the community and visit their art on display in the town hall.

For Mayfest every year, a selected year group from the school creates a giant for the parade. Many of the children choose to come to this event at the weekend where they are able to take part in the parade through the town with their creation.

Care Home Connections

As a school, we have made links with a local care home. The children visit the residents and talk to them, sing to them and play games with them.
